Glossary of Key Terms
#: The pound or Hash symbol is used for a concept known as ‘Hashtagging’ and is used to tag key words, themes or occasionally phrases to make searching and organising posts easier and more structured.
@: The at symbol is used to tag someone in a post.
Analytics Systems: A tool for collecting, measuring and analysing web traffic for optimizing web usage.
Application (App): Third party software program developed by Apple Mac that can be used on certain mobile devices or programs.
Blacklist: List of users or websites that are known to publish prohibited content.
Block: To ‘block’ a social media profile is to prevent them from viewing or adding to a user’s profile.
Blog Post: An entry on a blog; including audio, visual and written material.
Blog: A term derived from the phrase 'web log'. A journal that is published online consisting of separate and distinct entries, see Blog Posts.
Blogging: The process of writing and publishing a blog post.
Call-To-Action: A hook to grab or attract audiences’ attention in video form.
Check-In: A mobile function on Facebook that allows the user to virtually check-in to a business, organisation or place. Allows the user to share with their geographical location with friends.
DP: Display Picture: a chosen primary picture for a social media profile.
FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions.
Follow: Elect to track the posts of a particular page, group, blog or individual.
Hide: To ‘hide’ something or someone on Facebook, is to remove them from the user’s news feed.
HTML: Hypertext Markup Language - the language used to create online documents; design language used to determine the page structure and aesthetic elements.
IP Address: Internet Protocol Address: a unique address for a user’s Internet device.
Like: The user can show their engagement by ‘liking’ a post, picture, status, profile, group, page, community etc. which will be reported in their personal news feed.
Malware: Malicious software designed to gain unauthorized access and disrupt computer operation.
Podcast: Episodic audio files that can be subscribed to or downloaded.
Poke: To notify somebody on Facebook as a ‘poke.’
Re-blog: To share material from another’s blog on the user’s own blog page, with reference to the original source.
Re-Tweet: The act of sharing another’s Tweet on the user’s own Twitter page; similar to re-blogging (see re-blog). Commonly shortened to ‘RT’.

Spam (electronic): The use of online messaging systems to send multiple messages in bulk. In social media terms, spam can be interpreted as sending an overwhelming number of updates to followers.
Status: Brief post which is featured on an individual profile and will also show up in the news feed of those who follow the user or are the users friends.
Streaming: A way to watch video or listen to audio content online. It involves starting a progressive download and does not save the downloaded file to the user’s computer.
Tag: Attach a name to a picture, post or status.
Troll: Someone who posts rude, offensive or off- topic messages in an online community.
Tweet: The name given to a post made on a Twitter feed or account. All ‘Tweets’ have a 140-character word limit.
URL: Uniform (or Universal) Resource Locator - the address of a website on the World Wide Web.
Whitelist: A list of users (based on IP/Email addresses) that are considered to be spam free or providing safe content free of electronic viruses or malware.
